Whispering Pines, North Carolina
Though Sandy started out as a watercolorist, she switched to mixed media and collage and has been creating in those media for the past several years. Her “Family Matters” series has been her chief focus for the past 15 years. It evolved from a desire to make her work more personal and unique, as well as a new-found interest in genealogy.
The resulting paintings, which often include transfers of family photos, have become self-portraits and statements about time, life, and relationships. She hopes viewers will respond to them and infer “what they mean,” based on their own experiences, rather than having Sandy verbalizing what each symbol, color, texture, or image mean to her. It’s fun to view her lovely work and determine what the puzzle means to oneself. Recently, she has used her travels as inspiration for her collages.
Sandy has studied with many outstanding instructors over the last 23 years. She holds Masters Degrees in English and Education (emphasis: art) from Morehead State University in Kentucky and taught both English and Art for many years at the high school level. Her works have been exhibited in many state and national Exhibits. We feel so fortunate to have her works in our One of a Kind Gallery. Her website is www.sandystratil.com
