TOMMY B. McDONELL
Southern Pines, North Carolina
Tommy McDonell spent her undergraduate years at Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri. After moving to New York City in 1979, she returned to school to earn a Masters Degree in Interactive Telecommunications and a Doctor of Philosophy in TESOL from New York University. She believes that her work in these two fields explains her different interpretations of subject matter in her paintings.
Diagnosed with MS at age 43, Tommy found that her life changed drastically. Over the years her ability to read, which she loved, was diminished, and the pain associated with MS increased. She learned that being engrossed in something she really loved to do reduced the pain, and, consequently, her art became a primary past-time. She said she could work for several hours without noticing the pain.
Without even really knowing it, Tommy found herself drifting closer to her own version of modern or abstract art. She came to appreciate the importance of values and learned how to work in a variety of media: acrylics, alcohol inks, encaustics, oil pastels, and more. You will see the variety and lushness in her paintings, which we are delighted to have here at One of a Kind Gallery. Her website is http://tbmcdonellart.com
